Ninth anniversary of the 2017 escalation of violene against Rohingya

On 25 August 2026, the ninth anniversary of the 2017 escalation of violence, we will come together in Berlin to reflect on the situation of the Rohingya today, the realities of statelessness, and what justice can mean for a generation shaped by displacement and trauma.

Du interessierst dich für Myanmar, seine Sprache und Kultur? Im Wintersemester 2026/27 bietet das Institut für Asien- und Afrikawissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin einen Einsteigerkurs Myanmar I an.
Keine Vorkenntnisse erforderlich!
Im Kurs werden unter anderem vermittelt:
- • das myanmarische Schrift- und Lautsystem
- • Grundlagen der Sprache und Grammatik
- • Lesen und Schreiben
- • grundlegende Alltagssituationen und Kommunikation
- • kulturelle Kontexte zu Myanmar
Der Kurs kann auch von Studierenden anderer Universitäten sowie Gasthörenden online besucht werden.

A new report by Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) reveals the devastating impact of Myanmar's military attacks in Kachin State.
Only in Kachin state alone, nearly 250,000 people have been displaced, while more than 130 civilians, including 7 children, were killed in 2025. The report also documents repeated airstrikes, widespread destruction, and a worsening humanitarian crisis. The report also highlights the junta's aggressive offensive in Bhamo, where up to 50 airstrikes are carried out each day, alongside widespread destruction and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

For Patrick Hoffmann (GSM), standing with Myanmar is deeply connected to his own family history. Growing up with the stories of his Jewish family surviving Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, he learned that democracy is fragile and that the consequences of silence can be devastating. These experiences shaped his belief that “Never Again” is not only a lesson from history, but a responsibility for the present.
